Civic beautification is one of the Garden Club of Manchester’s most visible and rewarding initiatives. Throughout the year, members design, plant, and maintain seasonal planters at the municipal buildings in Manchester and Dorset, while also helping care for portions of the Manchester and Dorset Town Greens. These efforts create the welcoming streetscapes and public spaces enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

The Club also enhances community gathering places by creating seasonal floral arrangements for the Southern Vermont Arts Center and the Manchester Community Library. During the holidays, members continue a cherished tradition of more than 35 years by designing and hanging donated festive wreaths throughout Manchester and Dorset, adding warmth and seasonal beauty to our villages.

Education and environmental stewardship are at the heart of the Garden Club of Manchester’s mission. Through scholarships and community grants, we support programs that promote environmental awareness, conservation, and hands-on learning, including initiatives such as National Plant A Tree and the Blue and Gold Star Memorials.

Each year, the Club also awards a scholarship to a graduating high school senior pursuing studies in environmental science. By investing in the next generation of environmental leaders, we hope to inspire a lifelong commitment to protecting and preserving the natural beauty of our communities.

Conservation and education have been central to the Garden Club of Manchester’s mission for more than a century. Members actively support conservation efforts throughout the region, including maintaining the Boswell Botany Trail at the Southern Vermont Arts Center, a valuable resource showcasing native plants and local ecosystems.

The Club also fosters lifelong learning through guest speakers, workshops, garden tours, and field trips focused on horticulture, floral design, native plants, and environmental stewardship. By sharing knowledge and inspiring a deeper connection to nature, the Garden Club of Manchester helps preserve the landscapes that enrich our communities while encouraging future generations of gardeners and environmental stewards.

One of the Garden Club of Manchester’s most cherished conservation projects is the stewardship of the Boswell Botany Trail at the Southern Vermont Arts Center. This picturesque three-quarter-mile trail traces its origins to 1917 as the nature walk of the historic Webster Estate and was officially dedicated in 1964 in honor of its creator, Mrs. Harold "Petie" Boswell. Restored and expanded in 2001 with support from the Nichols Foundation and dedicated Garden Club members, the trail continues to be maintained by the Club as a living showcase of Vermont’s native flora.

Winding through a unique glacial microclimate, the trail features a remarkable diversity of native wildflowers, trees, and ferns, including many of Vermont’s 67 fern species. Since 2024, the Garden Club has renewed its commitment to the trail through ongoing maintenance, cleanup efforts, improved signage, and restoration projects designed to make it more welcoming, engaging, and educational for visitors. Today, the Boswell Botany Trail remains both a peaceful retreat and a lasting reflection of the Club’s dedication to conservation, environmental stewardship, and connecting people with the natural world.
